The science of sustainability: Orthopaedics lab receives global recognition

Building on its proud legacy of industry firsts, DePuy Synthes, the orthopaedics company of Johnson & Johnson, has its laboratory in Leeds, UK, recognised as platinum standard for sustainability best practices.

A MedTech laboratory at the DePuy Synthes research & development (R&D) campus in Leeds, UK, has become the first Johnson & Johnson site globally to gain a sustainability certification for outstanding work in reducing the environmental impact of laboratory space. Recognized as part of the My Green Lab Certification Programme, the Leeds lab was named a Platinum Level Certified Lab.

According to the nonprofit’s website, “My Green Lab is recognized by the United Nations Race to Zero campaign as a key measure of progress toward a zero-carbon future. My Green Lab Certification is considered the gold standard for laboratory sustainability best practices around the world.”

In its initial review of the Leeds facility, the My Green Lab programme conducted a survey of all personnel working in the lab and assessed areas such as waste reduction and recycling, resource management, water use, fume hoods and cold storage. Following this first assessment, the MedTech team gleaned new opportunities and insights that inspired them to make meaningful change and improvements before the second and final review. As a result, the Leeds Lab was ultimately awarded a platinum certificate, meaning that 79% of processes within the Lab met the sustainability criteria outlined by My Green Lab.

Platinum certification is a key step for DePuy Synthes as it endeavours to reach its local sustainability commitments and contribute toward Johnson & Johnson’s overall climate goals: to source 100% renewable electricity for our global operations by 2025; to achieve carbon neutrality in our global operations by 2030; and to reduce our absolute upstream value chain carbon emissions 20% by 2030.

“We are delighted that our Leeds site is the first Johnson & Johnson laboratory globally to achieve a sustainability certification by My Green Lab,” said Gemma Kurring, Senior Director, Knee Development, DePuy Synthes UK. “This is just one small step in our continuous efforts to reduce waste and CO2 emissions—thanks to all the team involved.”
